Greek football matches postponed again over violence, referee beaten in street attack
ATHENS, Greece – Greece’s football association says matches in the country’s professional leagues have been suspended indefinitely after a referee was beaten in a street and needed hospital treatment for his injuries.
Police said 45-year-old former FIFA referee Christoforos Zografos was severely beaten with wooden clubs early Friday by two men who approached him on a motorcycle in the western Kolonos area of the Greek capital.
The association said it would not send referees to upcoming league matches until “immediate steps” were taken to protect match officials.
Zografos is the assistant director of Central Referee Committee, which appoints match officials and is headed by retired Scottish referee Hugh Dallas.
Football matches were suspended for a week in September after a fan was beaten at a third division match and later died.
