Trump will nominate a lawyer as US ambassador to Mexico

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump will nominate the constitutional and appellate attorney Christopher Landau to be U.S. ambassador to Mexico, the White Houses announced Tuesday.

The statement said Landau was a law clerk for U.S. Supreme Court Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas.

The U.S. hasn’t had an ambassador in Mexico City since Roberta Jacobson stepped down last May. Jacobson was the first female U.S. ambassador to Mexico.

Mirtha Barcena in January became the first female Mexican ambassador to Washington, representing the government of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

Mexico’s government said later Tuesday that it will accept Landau as U.S. ambassador if he is confirmed by the Senate.

The Foreign Relations Department said the appointment “will contribute to promoting and strengthening a bilateral relationship of trust and mutual understanding.”
