B.C. lawyer suspended for disclosing client’s confidential info to media
VANCOUVER – Disclosing a client’s confidential information during a media interview has resulted in a Vancouver Island lawyer being suspended for professional misconduct.
The Law Society of B.C. says Jennifer McCormick of Ladysmith made public statements in November 2011 without her client’s consent.
The society says McCormick has been suspended for 45 days for breaching the duty of loyalty and solicitor-client privilege, which are cornerstones of the legal profession.
She has also been ordered to pay $5,000 for the cost of a law society hearing into the matter.
The suspension is expected to begin on Dec. 1.
Written reasons for the decision have yet to be released.
