No cause, no injuries in Vernon apartment fire

VERNON – No one was hurt and damage was kept to a minimum in a fire at one of the suites at the Parkview Garden Apartments in the Mission Hill neighbourhood late Friday night.

The call came in just before midnight. A fire was burning in the bedroom of a unit in the 12-plex at 2312 36th St.

Vernon fire fighters are crediting the quick action by a resident for keeping the blaze contained to the one bedroom in his 2nd floor apartment suite.

“The resident shut the door to his bedroom. That helped keep it contained to the one room and it didn’t spread,” according to captain Darren Cecchini. “We got there fairly quickly and knocked it down.”

Cecchini says the couple were sleeping in another room when the smoke detector when off, alerting them to the fire. They made it out safely.

The bedroom suffered some serious fire damage and the rest of the suite has smoke damage.

Emergency Social Services found the couple a place to stay for the night, and while they look for a place to live.

Investigators will be back on the scene Monday looking for the cause of the bedroom fire.

No dollar figure on the fire damage has been released.
