Central Okanagan Search and Rescue looks to add new recruits

KELOWNA – Central Okanagan Search and Rescue is looking to fill out its roster.

Training director Kevin Birnie said that candidates should have a strong outdoor recreational skillset, be reasonably fit, willing to learn and can work in a team environment.

"One of the biggest requirements we're looking for in a recruit is time commitment. Our members average about four hours (per) week on COSAR related events. Some volunteer 10 or 20 hours a week. That's a big commitment," said Birnie. "If you join us, you can expect to be called out in the middle of the day or night, seven days a week, 365 days a year responding to emergencies in weather most people try to avoid."

An open house for those interested in joining COSAR is Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. at Okanagan College in room H115. Applicants should apply online before 5 p.m. Sept. 26.

Birnie said successful candidates will receive the tools and training required to become active members.
