Brazil attorney general seeks investigation into 54 politicians in massive kickback scandal
RIO DE JANEIRO – Brazil’s attorney general has requested that investigations be opened against 54 top political figures in connection to a sprawling kickback scheme at state-run oil company Petrobras.
The office of Attorney General Rodrigo Janot said Tuesday that he has formally asked the Supreme Court for permission to investigate the politicians — whose names were not revealed.
Under Brazilian law, the top court must approve investigations against congressmen and top figures of the executive branch.
Any future charges or trials against such figures also must be conducted by the court.
Federal prosecutors say they’ve uncovered the largest corruption scheme yet known in Brazil.
They say that for over a decade, Brazil’s biggest construction and engineering firms paid at least $800 million to former Petrobras executives and others in exchange for inflated contracts.
