UPDATE: Buses running in School District 53, late in Penticton, no buses in Summerland

PENTICTON – In case you weren’t aware, the snow has been piling up outside.

Heavy snow yesterday and last night has covered the region.  School District 67 reports Penticton buses are running, but they will be late, while Summerland buses will not run this morning. The Summerland bus situation will be reassessed later today.

School District 53 is running buses to all schools except in Keremeos, Cawston and the Turtle Run in Willowbrook, according to an update on its website.

Berry and Smith Trucking, the contractor for district 67 school buses, could not confirm by 7:30 a.m. whether buses would run or not. District 67 School Superintendent Wendy Hyer said she was at home and “did not wish to speak to media” then abruptly hung up the phone.

School board Chair Linda Van Alphen is sick and could not be contacted.

We will have more information as soon as it becomes available. Schools are closed in Vernon, Kamloops and Kelowna.

A winter storm warning remains in effect for much of the Southern Interior, including Penticton, and another 5 to 15 centimetres of snow is expected with the system later today. Warming temperatures could lead to freezing rain developing Tuesday as well.

Environment Canada recommends you consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
