UPDATE: Air rescue called for injured sledder in backcountry east of Kelowna

KELOWNA – Two snowmobiles crashed in the Greystokes Protected Area east of Kelowna Sunday afternoon, Jan. 11, sending search and rescue teams into the backcountry to rescue an injured sledder.

Duane Tresnich with Central Okanagan Search and Rescue says two snowmobile teams were deployed to the popular winter recreation area near Mount Jubilee along with the Vernon Search and Rescue helicopter winch rescue team. Search and Rescue volunteers from Vernon also sent in a snowmobile team to access the area from the south side of the mountain.

A collision between two snowmobiles injured one person, Tresnich says.

“It’s not major injuries… it’s just they are so far up there it’s easier to get them out this way (by helicopter).”

One patient was transported to Kelowna General Hospital with a broken leg.
