Snow in Vancouver brings with it cancelled ferries and power outages

Vancouver residents woke up to snow on the ground Sunday morning and more could be on the way.

Environment Canada says Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster, Coquitlam and Maple Ridge will see five to 20 centimetres of snow by Sunday afternoon.

Late Saturday's snow brought with it downed trees and wires leaving about 3,000 people without power in Port Moody and Burnaby.

BC Ferries cancelled several sailings due to heavy wind including routes between Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay, between Tsawwassen and Duke Point, and between Horseshoe Bay and Departure Bay.

City of Vancouver spokeswoman Ashton Patis says the snow is being cleared and priority areas include arterial roads, bus stops, bridges, emergency and school routes and bike lanes.

She says the city has 71 vehicles and 29 other equipment units, 2000 tonnes of salt at its yards, and hundreds of personnel available to deploy as required.
