UPDATE: Kamloops RCMP rescue, apprehend distraught teen from rushing South Thompson River

Police and other emergency crews teamed up this afternoon to rescue a distraught teen who fled to the rushing South Thompson River in a stolen row boat.

Kamloops RCMP was originally called to a disturbance in the 2300-block of Valleyview Drive when the "emotionally distraught" 16-year-old involved in the altercation fled, stole the row boat from a neighbour and entered the fast-moving river.

"The teen was believed to be armed with an edged weapon, and was in possession of a hammer, which he allegedly used to damage the boat," Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey, spokesman for the RCMP Southeast District, said in a release.

Police and Kamloops Fire Rescue crews took to the water and both banks. They were assisted by a fixed-wing aircraft above and CP Rail police to rescue and apprehend the teen.

“Our police officers positioned themselves in strategic locations along the shorelines of the river as the event unfolded, while a specially trained negotiator was called upon to assist with speaking with the young man,” states Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey, spokesman for the RCMP Southeast District. “There was a significant amount of risk involved to not only the young male, but all first responders. We are thankful that no one was injured during this incident.”

The teen was taken to hospital by ambulance for a full assessment while the investigation continues.
