Penticton Lakeside to add skating to list of resort activities

PENTICTON – It looks like there will be an ice surface in the downtown area by next winter after all, according to an announcement by Penticton Lakeside Resort, Convention Centre and Casino earlier this week.

The idea of an ice rink in Gyro Park was floated during city council budget discussions earlier this year.

The resort complex said they would be installing a 30 by 50 foot, fully lit ice rink on the resort’s private beach in time for the winter of 2015-16.

Regional Sales and Marketing Director Brannigan Boyd said the rink comes complete with chillers and can produce ice at temperatures as high as eight degrees Celsius. She said the ice surface would be open to guests at first and later to the public as demand permits.

Brannigan said the venue was ideal for winter sports in Penticton.

“Where else can you enjoy food and drinks while watching skaters, with Okanagan Lake serving as a backdrop right behind them?” Brannigan asked.

“You can tighten your laces, hit the beach and glide along a sheet of ice while embracing the beauty of Okanangan Lake,” she said.
