False alarm in Kelowna after foot race in creek triggers search and rescue effort
Someone saw a teenage girl jump off a bridge over Mission Creek in Kelowna, but unbeknownst to the witnesses she landed on a trail and not in the water.
There were two girls in their teens running on the trail next to the creek around 5 p.m. on May 28, according to press releases from RCMP and Central Okanagan Search and Rescue.
They were crossing Casorso Road bridge when one of them jumped off the bridge and onto the path, but two people saw her and thought she had jumped into the fast-moving water so they called the police.
RCMP and COSAR searched the creek high and low for two days with people wading through the water, police boats, a drone and the RCMP helicopter.
A parent of one of the girls recognized her and contacted RCMP to explain the situation, so the search has been called off.
RCMP want to remind people that the creek is dangerous this time of year because of the high water level and strong current.
