Strong day at Olympics for Kamloops speed skater

KAMLOOPS – Short track speed skate Jessica Hewitt could end up on the Olympic podium before the games in Sochi, Russia are over.

The Kamloops native, 26, advanced in two speed skating events at the winter games on Monday.

In the women’s 500-metre preliminaries, Hewitt advanced with the second best time of 43.447 seconds.

The quarter-final will be held on Thursday, Feb. 13.

Hewitt is also part of the team that advanced Monday to the finals in the women’s 3,000-metre relay with a time of 4:08.871.

The team, which includes Marie-Eve Drolet, Marianne St. Gelais and Valerie Maltais, came out of the heats with the second best time.

The finals in the women’s 3,000-metre relay are over a week away on Feb. 18.

Hewitt was selected for the national team this past summer.
