Heading east? Heavy snowfall warning on Highway 1 through Rogers Pass

Travel over the Trans-Canada Highway to Alberta could prove tricky today as a strong frontal system makes its way across the region over the next 24 hours.

Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for the Trans-Canada Highway through Eagle and Rogers Pass this morning, Dec. 7.

Heavy snow is expected to begin this morning and continue until late Tuesday for Rogers Pass, with accumulations of between 15 and 25 centimetres.

"With temperatures below zero and ample moisture, heavy snow will begin this morning over North Columbia and Rogers Pass," the snowfall warning reads. "As the frontal system continues to push south, heavy snow will start falling in East Columbia and Yoho Park later this afternoon."

No warnings have been issued for the Coquihalla Highway today.

Road conditions can be monitored through the Drive BC website.

With the week starting with temperatures higher than normal in Kamloops and the Okanagan, it doesn’t look like there will be any snow accumulation on valley bottoms.

Environment Canada says the Okanagan could see a mix of showers or flurries today through Wednesday, with daytime highs between 1 Celsius and 3 C, a couple of degrees above the seasonal norm of -1 C for Vernon, Kelowna and Penticton.

There is a 40 per cent chance of flurries or rain showers in Kamloops today, with a high of 8 Celsius expected. A chance of showers remains Tuesday through Wednesday, with daytime highs of of 9 C Tuesday, and 6 C Wednesday.

Kamloops's normal daytime high for this time of year is 1 C.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
