RCMP hope to identify man caught on camera near Kelowna stabbing

Kelowna RCMP are looking to the public to help identify a person who was near the scene of a stabbing near Capri Mall two weeks ago, but won’t say why.

The detachment released an image of the man, taken from surveillance footage, in a Dec. 17 news release.

According to police, he was in the area of the stabbing, on the 1100 block of Sutherland Avenue, around the time of the Dec. 2 stabbing, but it’s not clear whether he’s a suspect or a witness in what could have been a random attack.

It comes after a CBC report following the incident in which the victim’s family sounded an alarm because police hadn’t warned the public of what appeared to be a random stabbing.

Police did not describe the incident or the extent of the victim’s injuries in the release, but the woman, in her 60s, was hospitalized and is recovering, according to the CBC.

When iNFOnews.ca reached out to Kelowna RCMP this week, the detachment responded with the same statement it gave to the CBC.

“If we had concerns regarding public safety, we would inform the public immediately,” spokesperson Cpl. Allison Konsmo said in a written statement.

She did not say whether there was any robbery involved or whether it might have been a random attack, but she did say there is “no evidence” to suggest it was targeted or that the victim and her attacker knew each other.

It’s not clear whether the man in the photo police released is believed to be a suspect or a witness.

“The Kelowna RCMP are just seeking to speak with this individual at this time. Other than the request to identify this individual we are not releasing any other information at this time as the investigation is still ongoing,” Konsmo told iNFOnews.ca.

RCMP describe the man in the photo as a Caucasian male who wearing a light brown hoodie under a black puffy jacket, with black pants and a black toque. He was possibly carrying a bag or backpack.

Police are looking to identify the man and speak to any witnesses who were in the area. It’s not clear what time the Dec. 2 stabbing took place.

Okay… if there is a stabbing in daylight hours on a public street in the city of Kelowna and there is “”no evidence” to suggest it was targeted or that the victim and her attacker knew each other.”” how can there possibly not be a concern regarding public safety? ? A member of the public walking on a public street appears to have been chosen at random to be stabbed. That is a public safety concern. Just by its very definition it is a public safety concern. This statement from the detachment is ridiculous!
