Kootenay SPCA takes 23 rabbits into care, reminds owners to spay or neuter

East and West Kootenay SPCA facilities took in 23 rabbits over the last month, as a result of unplanned litters and now the B.C. SPCA now wants to remind the public to spay or neuter their pets.

"A single rabbit female could have as many as 144 bunnies," says Christy King, manager of the East Kootenay B.C. SPCA.

The Kootenay facilities took in 22 bunnies between eight and 20 weeks old and one adult rabbit.

King said they are "concerned by the dramatic intake" over the past year. She said they took only six rabbits into care in 2019, but the next year that number jumped to 53. She also notes that it is important to research the needs and care required for a rabbit as they are very different from a cat or a dog. 

Those interested in adopting one of these rabbits can visit spca.bc.ca/adopt for more information. Some of them have already been spayed or neutered, the rest will have them included in the adoption.
