iN PHOTOS: Hummingbird builds nest, raises chicks on a porch light in Kelowna

Kelowna gardener Jen Frost has been observing a family of hummingbirds since the mother built a nest on top of a lightbulb under her porch roof in April.

Two babies hatched recently and Frost has had an up-close view of the mother coming and going throughout the day feeding them.

“It has been fascinating watching the mother build the nest and then finding out she hatched two babies,” she said. “They haven’t made any noise. Apparently, if you do hear them that means that they aren’t well fed, but the mother is doing a good job.”

Frost is an avid gardener who doesn’t have a hummingbird feeder but plants lots of flowers the birds like to suck nectar from, attracting many of them to her property every year.

“They like long, tubular flowers in orange, reds and pinks,” she said. “I think they like our yard, we have almost an acre with a lot of cedar trees surrounding the property and I don’t spray any chemicals. We have lots of other trees too, it’s very majestic with lots of nature.”

Frost has had to put towels over her patio furniture as the baby birds squirt poo out the side of the nest but said they are worth the mess and will be flying away soon.

“I feel blessed to have a hummingbird family here, they’re so cute, I love it,” she said.
