Phone fraudsters pose as RCMP officers in West Kelowna

West Kelowna RCMP are warning the public about a persistent scam that has fraudsters claiming to be police officers.

RCMP say it has received multiple reports from residents over the past month of scammers claiming the person they are calling has a traffic ticket and they demand that it be paid immediately.

They’re using the names Const. Miller and Const. McLeod. They use high pressure tactics and fear to get the victims to give them money either by a request for gift cards, cryptocurrency or e-transfers.

If you’ve been contacted by a scam artist you’re urged to contact West Kelowna RCMP and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

“The West Kelowna RCMP continues to monitor the situation and reminds the public to remain vigilant, especially when receiving unsolicited calls claiming to be from police or other authorities,” reads a media release issued today, Feb. 9.
