A Tk’emlups man’s injuries included burns and a maimed ear when he was allegedly attacked by his own wife and another man.

Now, his wife and the other man are on trial as the Crown alleges the pair were violently initiating Brandon Hoodicoff into a gang. Prosecutors laid out their case for a Kamloops jury, Feb. 9.

Prosecutor Camille Cooke said Hoodicoff will testify during the trial, and she expects he will detail how he was “tortured” and maimed at the hands of his wife, Jessica Valerie Jules, and the other man, Devon Carl Jules.

Hoodicoff, 40, and Jessica were married and had three children at the time of the arrests in April 2024.

“I anticipate Mr. Hoodicoff’s evidence will make it clear that he and Ms. Jules, like many couples do, were going through a rough patch at the time of the alleged offence,” Cooke told the jury.

At the time, Devon Jules had been living with the couple after they began spending more time together and doing drugs together, the jury heard in the Crown’s opening statement.

Devon, not related to Jessica, proposed they start “a crew” to sell drugs, Cook said. It’s not clear whether Hoodicoff was supportive of the plan, but the jury heard his initiation was a violent ordeal.

The jury will hear how in March 2024, Hoodicoff and his wife were confined in their bedroom by a knife-wielding Devon. He then organized Hoodicoff’s initiation where “he was beaten and had part of his ear cut off” by his wife, Cooke said.

That’s when Devon made Jessica “second-in-command” on his crew, Cooke said.

In a second incident, Hoodicoff broke some of the group’s rules, so Jessica used “various tools” to cut and burn him.

On April 17, 2024, Hoodicoff managed to leave his Tk’emlups home and contacted police, the jury heard.

Tk’emlups RCMP Const. Cody Lockwood met him near an A&W restaurant on the reserve, and Lockwood called for more officers to surveil and arrest Devon and Jessica. They were arrested later that day at the home and a Kamloops motel, respectively.
