Vandals strike blow against campaign to save North Okanagan park

A campaign to save Rose Swanson Mountain recreational area in Armstrong has suffered a setback and has its new signage vandalized and burnt.

According to a media release from the Save Rose Swanson Mountain organization, signage recently constructed at Chamberlain Road in Armstrong was vandalism and burnt by a group of partiers sometime during the weekend Jan. 16 and 17.

"I don’t think it was a personal attack, just opportunistic,” campaign organizer Beverley Peacock said in the media release. "But it highlights risks to a park used by thousands every year."

A campaign to prevent logging at the trail network and the recreational area was launched early in January and to date has garnered more than 21,000 signatures.

"It’s a minor setback but we will continue pushing forward," Peacock said. "Our goal is to document, extend and protect this amazing natural habitat for future generations."

According to the group, the province has mapped out proposed logging areas at the site.
