Yes, you can be ticketed for not wearing a seatbelt even though police are watching for unlawful use of a cell phone.

Vernon Mounties working a cell phone enforcement campaign yesterday pulled a car over and told the driver he was being stopped for not wearing his seat belt. RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk says the officer was taken aback by the response.

The man said, "I heard on the radio about the cell phone enforcement thing being done. I didn't think you would be charging for seat belt infractions."

Molendyk says the Feb. 14 blitz was part of distracted driving month and the following charges were laid:

  • 42 fail to wear a seatbelt.
  • 12 use electronic device.
  • 5 other

As well, a two month driving prohibition order was issued and they also wrote ten warnings.

The RCMP wants to remind the public these enforcement actions are for the safety of not only the people in your vehicle but all the motoring public.
