What Salmon Arm cops found after caller heard ‘screaming and groaning’ from hotel room

Police were called to a Salmon Arm hotel room for what sounded like a man in pain, but officers arrived to find a sweaty man with more than 100 grams of cocaine.

What was initially a wellness check ended with his arrest on suspicion of drug trafficking.

On March 20, Salmon Arm RCMP were called to the hotel at 7:30 p.m. The caller said they heard “noise, screaming and groaning” from one of the rooms. To the caller, it sounded like he was in pain, according to a news release.

Police knocked on the door when they got to the room. They could hear the groaning, but no one answered, according to Salmon Arm RCMP.

An employee opened the door and police found a 43-year-old man who was “sweating profusely and appeared to be under the influence of drugs,” police said.

After an initial denial, he admitted he had some cocaine. Hotel staff had the man leave the room and police spotted cash, along with bags and a tupperware container of cocaine inside, according to the news release.

He was arrested to sober up and police seized more than 100 grams of cocaine, $1,410 in cash, a cigarette carton and two cell phones.

Police didn’t identify the man, but he is not local to Salmon Arm. Mounties will be recommending charges for possession for the purpose of trafficking to prosecutors.
