THOMPSON: The things I wonder about in Trump’s America

I  wonder what it’s like to care about the unborn – arguing all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court to outlaw abortions – but not so much for those who become living, breathing babies and then as children get killed by gunmen in schools…ignoring sensible gun control?

I wonder what it’s like on the one hand to hate almost everything the government does, and on the other rely on that same government to dictate the law of the land…that an abortion is illegal…even from rape or incest?

I wonder how millions of people can be duped on the one hand by politicians’ rhetoric about big government intrusion in matters of public health and through freedom of choice literally kill hundreds of thousands of people unnecessarily in a pandemic, while on the other hand can be so outraged about the sanctity of life that bounties on those seeking abortions – or even driving someone seeking an abortion to a clinic – seem morally right?

Don Thompson

I wonder about people who on the one hand claim to have a choice about vaccinations for diseases that will ultimately kill more than one million Americans, while on the other hand have no problem with the government – and only the the government – deciding who remains pregnant and gives birth to children?

I wonder why people who on the one hand embrace law and order on matters of justice for some Americans, on the other hand deny justice to other Americans?

I wonder why working people who on the one hand vote for Republicans – no matter how crazy – and on the other hand don’t have an issue with billionaires and corporations paying less income tax than they do?

I wonder why rich Republicans on the one hand put so much stock in passing along inheritances to their children and grandchildren, and on the other hand deny climate change, which they also bequeath to their children and grandchildren. Does wealth somehow buy them some time?

I wonder why one-third of Americans still support a President and his Party who have made them earn less, pay more taxes and higher prices for housing, healthcare, groceries and gas?

I wonder how you can start a war without real cause…lie about the reasons…spend $1.2 Billion a day on that war…kill innocent Americans and Iranians, including hundreds of children…make gas, grocery and hundreds of other consumer products cost more…and spend your time planning an illegal and unwanted ballroom?

I wonder how you can hire complete incompetents for important government positions…and still blame Hillary…and Obama…and Biden for everything the government is doing?

I wonder how people can listen to Tucker Carlson apologize for helping Trump for ten years…and accept his apology now?

I wonder how folks can be okay with Trump’s pardons of 1,500+ felons….many of whom went on to commit other felonies, like Driving Under the Influence, Rape, Murder and Child Molestation…but praise Trump’s claim as a law-and-order president?

I wonder if Trump voters ever think about the thousands of children separated from their parents – most under four years old – after entering the U.S. illegally?

I wonder if Republicans are at all troubled that Donald Trump never released his income tax returns…or put any of his holdings in trust…the first and only president of the U.S. to avoid those ethical steps?

I wonder how someone demands law and order…but votes for and supports a man with 34 felony convictions for president?

I wonder why folks believe Trump is for anything resembling law and order and equal justice when the murder rate has gone up during his presidency…and there have been nearly 1,800 mass shootings?

I wonder how you can claim to be educated and still believe other countries are paying Trump tariffs on goods coming into your country?

I wonder how you can call yourself a patriot when the guy you voted for president considers the world’s worst dictators his friends…and allies are considered enemies?

I wonder a lot more about America…but I don’t have enough room in this column to list them all.

Finally, I really do wonder why anyone might think Canada would ever be a 51st state of the United States?

Yes there truly is a lot to wonder about. But I wonder how so many Canadians can support the leader of the opposition here who spouts the same political drivil and has nothing substantial to offer Canada
