iN NUMBERS: Survey says businesses in B.C. don’t like DRIPA

The Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous People Act, or DRIPA, has been the focus of controversy recently. Some people want to repeal it while others think it’s essential for reconciliation.

A survey by the Business Council of BC found far more opposition to DRIPA than a Angus Reid Institute poll that got responses from a more diverse group of British Columbians.

Here are the numbers:

  • 98: Per cent of respondents to a business survey said DRIPA isn’t living up to its promise to create investment certainty in B.C.
  • 80: Per cent of respondents to a business survey said they agree that reconciliation is important.
  • 74: Per cent of business respondents said DRIPA has decreased investment plans.
  • 73: Per cent of business respondents said DRIPA has complicated and slowed down permitting.
  • 59: Per cent of business respondents want to repeal DRIPA.
  • 31: Per cent of business respondents want to amend DRIPA.
  • 47: Per cent of BC Angus Reid respondents said they support the BC Conservative plan to repeal DRIPA.
  • 41: Per cent of BC Angus Reid respondents said there isn’t anything else to do for reconciliation, enough has been done.
  • 31: Per cent of BC Angus Reid respondents said Premier David Eby has done a very bad job at balancing the land rights of Indigenous people with private property rights.
  • 20: Points. That’s how far Eby’s approval rating has dropped since March of last year.
  • 5: That’s how many BC Conservative leadership candidates are planning on pushing to repeal DRIPA, and there’s only five in the running.
