Mountie who had affair with confidential informant fired

An RCMP corporal has been forced to resign after having an affair with a confidential informant.

According to a recently published Dec. 4, 2025 RCMP Conduct Board decision, the extramarital affair came to light in December 2023, when a colleague reported a suspected sexual relationship between the corporal and a confidential informant.

After an investigation, the Mountie, referred to as Corporal X in the decision, admitted to the affair.

The decision has very few details about what took place, and the name of the corporal and where and when the relationship took place have been redacted.

It appears the relationship went on for around six months, while the corporal was responsible for an “informant-driven” criminal investigation.

The decision said the informant was registered with the RCMP as a confidential source, and the investigation involved multiple law enforcement agencies. It appears to have been initiated based on information that came from the informant.

Throughout the investigation, the corporal passed on information from the informant to other officers and that information was used to submit applications to the court.

“Notably, surveillance was conducted, and judicial authorizations were sought. In seeking these authorizations, an (RCMP member) was assigned to complete the necessary applications. That (RCMP member) relied on the information provided by Corporal X in swearing his oaths,” the Conduct Board decision reads.

The Conduct Board said that while the corporal did not mislead the court personally, he had allowed his colleagues to use affidavits that contained misleading information.

“Not only did Corporal X’s surreptitious relationship with an informant while receiving information from that individual breach RCMP policy, but they also acted on that information despite their obvious conflict of interest,” the Conduct Board said.

The corporal was remorseful for his actions and argued that a 40-day suspension was an appropriate penalty.

He provided 16 complimentary performance assessments.

“It is evident that Corporal X has a specialized skill set and has been an asset to the RCMP,” the decision reads.

However, the Conduct Board said Corporal X has severed the employment relationship between himself and the RCMP.

“The RCMP as an employer has a responsibility to maintain the public’s trust in the organization. There have been multiple reports over the past several years that have drawn significant media attention. These reports have tarnished the reputation of the RCMP and diminished the public trust. To rebuild this trust, the RCMP must demonstrate that it is holding members who contravene the Code of Conduct accountable,” the Board ruled.

Ultimately, the Conduct Authority ordered the corporal to resign within two weeks, or he would be fired.

The decision said the informant was later “deactivated” and the investigation was dropped.
