Crews get handle on small wildfire near West Kelowna

Crews are fighting a small, smouldering wildfire near West Kelowna this afternoon.

The blaze was spotted at around 1 p.m., May 20, near Bear Lake Main and Blue Grouse Mountain Roads in Electoral Area West, according to the regional district.

The regional district said BC Wildfire Service crews are on the scene.

It’s currently listed as out of control and BC Wildfire suspects it was human caused.

No word if the fire threatens any buildings or infrastructure.

Northwest winds are around 20 km/h this afternoon gusting up to 40 km/h. The wind is expected to be lighter this evening. There isn’t any rain in the forecast this evening.

Shae Stearns from BC Wildfire Kamloops Fire Centre said there are ground crews as well as a helicopter working the blaze. The fire is smouldering with some visible flames and it’s spreading slowly.

“Helicopters are definitely used to help decrease activity, however, they can’t fully put out a fire. So, it can definitely help decrease that activity. But you do need ground crews to follow up to make sure the fire is fully extinguished,” she said.

Stearns said the fire is in an area that was previously burned through by wildfire so there’s less fuel to burn.
