Seahawks acquire WR/special teamer Irv Charles in trade with Jets

SEATTLE (AP) — The reigning Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks acquired special teams standout Irv Charles from the New York Jets for a 2028 conditional seventh-round pick.

Charles, 29, missed the 2025 season following ACL surgery, but was a standout special teams player for New York for two seasons before injuring his knee in a 32-26 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Dec. 8, 2024.

The 6-foot-4, 219-pound Charles signed with the Jets as an undrafted free agent in 2023, and played in 25 games over his New York tenure. During his NFL career, Charles has 14 tackles on special teams.

Special teams were critical to Seattle’s run to its second Super Bowl title. Under special teams coordinator Jay Harbaugh, who was in his second season, the Seahawks had one of the best overall units in the NFL in 2025.

In his 11th season, Jason Myers set the NFL record for most points by a kicker in a single season with 171, surpassing David Akers’ 166. Punter Michael Dickson was a second-team AP All-Pro selection in his eighth year in the league after averaging 42.2 yards per punt, and landing 20 of his 52 punts inside the 20-yard line.

Seattle was also tied in allowing the second-fewest punt returns (19) and fourth-fewest touchbacks (three) as a team in 2025. Including the playoffs, Seattle scored five special teams touchdowns, four of them on returns.
