Canadians Auger-Aliassime, Mboko move on to third round at French Open

PARIS — Canadian tennis stars Félix Auger-Aliassime and Victoria Mboko each came back from a set down to win their second-round matches Thursday at the French Open.

Auger-Aliassime, the men’s fourth seed posted a 4-6, 6-0, 7-5, 6-1 win over Argentina’s Roman Andres Burruchaga.

Ninth-seed Mboko followed with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 win over Czech veteran Katerina Siniakova in women’s action.

Auger-Aliassime broke Burruchaga seven times on 10 chances and was dominant on serve, converting 85 per cent of first serve points and firing seven aces.

Burruchaga had opportunities to challenge Auger-Aliassime’s serve but converted just two of his eight chances to break.

Auger-Aliassime also won five games to love, compared to just one for Burruchaga.

Auger-Aliassime, who is looking to advance past the fourth round at the clay-court Grand Slam for the first time, will next face 31st seed Brandon Nakashima of the United States.

Mboko started strong, getting an early break to go up 2-0 in the first set. But Siniakova responded by breaking Mboko four times in the set, including a key win to go up 6-5.

In a match where both players struggled to hold serve, Mboko and Siniakova traded breaks over the final three games of the second set, with Mboko coming out on top.

The 19-year-old from Burlington, Ont., found her form in a dominant third set, winning the final four games and clinching the match with her eighth break.

Mboko, who will at least match her third-round performance in her Grand Slam debut at last year’s French Open, will next face 19th seed Madison Keys of the U.S.
