Wozniak downs McHale to reach Rogers Cup quarterfinals
MONTREAL – Aleksandra Wozniak defeated Christina McHale 7-6 (5), 6-3 to complete a rain delayed match on Saturday and advance to the quarter-finals of the US$2.168-million women’s Rogers Cup.
Wozniak was one game from victory on Friday night when their third-round match was halted by rain. She needed only a few minutes to close out the match Saturday.
The Blainville, Que., resident became the first Canadian since Patricia Hy-Boulais in 1992 to reach the Rogers Cup quarter-finals. She will next face the winner of the match between seventh-seeded Danish Caroline Wozniacki and American Varvara Lepchenko.
In other completed matches, second seed Agnieszka Radwanska downed Chanelle Scheepers 6-2, 6-4 and No. 10 Na Li beat No. 8 Sara Errani 6-4, 6-2. Li will face Radwanska later Saturday.
