British artist Jo Longhurst wins Canada’s richest photo award, Grange Prize

TORONTO – British artist Jo Longhurst has won the Grange Prize, Canada’s largest photography award, which comes with a $50,000 cheque.

Longhurst was competing against fellow finalists Emmanuelle Leonard of Montreal, Annie MacDonell of Toronto and Jason Evans of the United Kingdom.

Longhurst was chosen after 10 weeks of voting online, at Toronto’s Art Gallery of Ontario and Canada House in London, where the work of the finalists is being displayed until Jan. 6, 2013.

According to the organizers, her award-winning photos of gymnasts and breeding dogs “investigate the ways we strive for perfection and the role photographs play in upholding these ideals.”

The other three finalists each receive $5,000.
