Legislation would give Art Gallery of Nova Scotia more control of its operations

HALIFAX – The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia would no longer have to seek cabinet approval for operational decisions including acquisitions under legislative changes proposed today.

Provincial Heritage Minister Leonard Preyra says the gallery’s board would also be able to set up an independent foundation to raise money for long-term planning and special projects.

Preyra says establishing a foundation will ensure that money earmarked for gallery projects won’t revert to general operating expenditures.

Director Ray Cronin says the gallery’s overall budget is $3.6 million, $2.2 million of which comes from the province.
