Close to 11,000 public service jobs axed since budget: Treasury Board

OTTAWA – The federal government says 10,980 public service jobs have been cut since the March 2012 budget.

Roughly 7,500 were eliminated through attrition.

The budget said 19,200 positions would be cut this year as part of the government’s efforts to cut $5.2 billion in spending.

Public Safety is set to lose the most jobs, while the Finance Department will lose the fewest.

Treasury Board President Tony Clement says the goal is to shrink the size of government while minimizing the impact on employees.

Some public sector workers demonstrated on Parliament Hill on Friday against the cuts, which they say hurt services to Canadians.
