Firefighters extinguished a fire at a building on the UBC Okanagan campus in Kelowna this afternoon.
The fire began around 12:30 p.m. in the Creative and Critical Studies building. The Kelowna Fire Department received reports of smoke coming out of the building and once firefighters arrived on the scene they found out it was in a challenging spot.
“First arriving crews realized that the fire was kind of inside the structure of the building and had very difficult access to it,” Deputy Fire Chief Larry Watkinson said on the scene.
A crowd of students gathered to watch the firefighters work.
Watkinson said the fire started due to some work being done on the roof when insulated foam packaging caught fire and it ran up the building inside of the cladding.
No one was found in the building by the time firefighters got there and Watkinson confirmed that there were no injuries.
The fire was contained to the part of the structure above the building’s open lobby, but there is some water and smoke damage throughout the building.
“I would anticipate there will be interruptions to some of the classrooms that are affected,” he said. “There was smoke and water damage throughout the building. And some of the forcible entry tactics that we had to use to get into the rooms that we didn’t have access to.”
There were 30 firefighters, five engines, two ladder trucks and a fire investigator’s drone on the scene.
