Flooded emergency room at Surrey hospital to remain closed for at least 2 weeks

SURREY, B.C. – One of the busiest emergency departments in B.C. will be closed for at least two weeks as crews repair damage from a flood caused by a construction accident on Monday.

A temporary urgent care centre has been set up at Surrey Memorial Hospital for now.

But ambulances will transport 911 patients to other hospitals until the ER at Surrey Memorial reopens.

The Fraser Health Authority says the medical imaging area located on the same floor as the emergency room will also be closed until the damage can be fully assessed.

Outpatient dialysis patients have been contacted and are being directed to other renal care services and elective surgeries are expected to resume over the next few days.

Dirty water poured into the emergency room after a water main broke, forcing staff to move 25 patients to other parts of the hospital.
