It’s all-hands-on-desk as retailers like LL Bean make final push before Christmas

FREEPORT, Maine – With the final retail push under way, everyone is getting into the act at L.L. Bean. That means even the CEO and other top executives are answering calls and shipping items.

CEO Chris McCormick has spent several days this week boxing products in the busy 1-million-square-foot distribution centre in Freeport, Maine. It’s part of an annual all-hands-on-deck strategy.

This season, the deadline for orders with guaranteed Christmas delivery is the latest ever, with L.L. Bean offering free shipping as late as noon Friday. Some are taking orders up to Saturday.

Retailers are counting on late shoppers to help their bottom line in a retail season that so far has been less than stellar. Michael McNamara from MasterCard Advisors’ SpendingPulse says shoppers are expected to spend $34 million Friday and Saturday.
