Premier hopeful that Harper will change Criminal Code after Rehtaeh Parsons case
HALIFAX – Nova Scotia’s premier says he is encouraged by Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s comments that it’s time to stop using the word bullying to describe what allegedly happened to Rehtaeh (Ruh-TAY-ah) Parsons.
Darrell Dexter says he hopes that means that Harper is open to changing the Criminal Code after Rehtaeh committed suicide, which her family says came after she was bullied as a result of being sexually assaulted.
When asked Thursday about Rehtaeh’s case, Harper said he believed the term bullying does not fit with what allegedly happened to the 17-year-old girl.
Harper said he believes the circumstances that allegedly led to her death are criminal activity.
The girl’s family says a photograph of the alleged incident was also distributed.
The RCMP say they investigated the allegations but concluded there were insufficient grounds to lay charges.
