Witness dubbed ‘Mr. Three Per Cent’ springs to defence of ex-city official

MONTREAL – As Quebec’s corruption inquiry gets ready to hear from the highest-ranking elected official to appear so far, one of his friends has testified in his defence.

Former fundraiser Bernard Trepanier says Frank Zampino never had anything to do with granting engineering contracts at the City of Montreal.

Zampino used to be head of the city’s powerful executive committee and was the right-hand man of former mayor Gerald Tremblay.

Zampino is due before Quebec’s corruption inquiry as soon as Trepanier finishes his testimony.

The man nicknamed ”Mr. Three Per Cent” defended his longtime friend and confidant today, telling the Charbonneau Commission that Zampino was not involved in the awarding of any city contracts.

Both men are both facing fraud charges in connection with a land deal in Montreal.
