Serie A match between AC Milan, Roma briefly suspended due to fans’ racist chants at Balotelli

MILAN – The Serie A match between AC Milan and Roma was briefly suspended Sunday because of racist chanting directed at Italy striker Mario Balotelli by the visiting Roma fans.

Play was halted for approximately a minute and a half in the second half at the San Siro to allow Roma captain Francesco Totti to gesticulate to his team’s fans to cease and desist.

There had already been incidents of racist chanting in the first half, and fans were warned over the speaker system that the game could be suspended.

Milan striker Kevin-Prince Boateng famously walked off the field with teammates in January after enduring racist abuse during a friendly against a fourth-tier Italian club.
