Former Winnipeg quarterback Joey Elliott signs contract with Lions

VANCOUVER – The B.C. Lions have signed free agent quarterback Joey Elliott.

The 26-year-old Franklin, Ind., native spent the past three seasons with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. During that time, he dressed for 33 games, including nine as the team’s starter.

Last season, the Purdue grad had his most productive year as a pro as he threw for 2,101 yards and five touchdowns.

Elliott is expected to battle for B.C.’s backup quarterback job following Mike Reilly’s departure to Edmonton as a free agent.

Lions general manager Wally Buono says he is a key signing for the team.

Starter Travis Lulay and second-year pro Thomas De Marco are the Lions’ only holdovers at quarterback.

Elliott and the rest of the Lions will take the field for training camp in Kamloops, B.C., on June 2.
