Yankees closer Mariano Rivera honoured by crosstown-rival Mets and FDNY at Citi Field

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Yankees closer Mariano Rivera has been honoured by the New York Mets and FDNY before his final scheduled visit to Citi Field.

Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon presented Rivera with a mounted fire hose nozzle, and New York City Fire Commissioner Sal Cassano gave baseball’s career saves leader a mounted call box during a brief ceremony Tuesday inside the ballpark.

Rivera, who plans to retire after this season, also accepted an invitation from Wilpon to throw out the ceremonial first pitch before Tuesday night’s Subway Series game between the crosstown rivals, weather permitting. The start was delayed by rain.

Wilpon said although it seems unlikely, he’d like to see Rivera again in the World Series.
