Nepal celebrates 60th anniversary of Everest conquest, honours climbers

KATMANDU, Nepal – Nepal has celebrated the 60th anniversary of the conquest of Mount Everest and is honouring climbers who followed the footsteps of Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay.

Among them is Italian Reinhold Messner who was the first climber to scale Everest without using bottled oxygen and the first person to climb all the 14 highest peaks in the world.

Nepalese officials offered flower garlands and scarfs and were taken around the city on horse-drawn chariots followed by hundreds of people who marched holding banners to mark the anniversary.

Hillary and Norgay reached the Everest summit on May 29, 1953. Their relatives were also honoured at Wednesday’s ceremony.
