Accountants reserve judgment on whether new BoC governor will be good as old

OTTAWA – Stephen Poloz officially takes the helm of the Bank of Canada today and chartered accountants, at least, seem to be taking a wait and see approach on whether he’ll be good for the economy.

A May survey by the Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada shows a majority are reserving judgment on Poloz, who was a surprise pick for the job.

The survey results suggest the accountants believe Poloz has a tough act to follow in taking over from Mark Carney, who left the institution early for the Bank of England.

Asked if Poloz will be good for the economy, 56 per cent were neutral or withholding their opinion.

And three quarters said they want the new governor to follow the policies of the old.

As well, 32 per cent said they believed Carney’s departure would diminish Canada’s influence on the world stage, as opposed to 30 per cent who said it would not.

The survey of 322 accountants in senior corporate positions was conducted by Harris-Decima research.
