Joni Mitchell to perform at tribute in her honour at Toronto’s Luminato
TORONTO – Joni Mitchell will take the stage at a tribute in her honour during the Luminato festival.
Mitchell will recite a new poem with musical accompaniment from longtime drummer/collaborator Brian Blade and trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire.
The 69-year-old plans to take the stage for both nights of “Joni: A Portrait in Song,” which is being held June 18 and 19 at Massey Hall.
The presence of the folk singer/songwriter will certainly soften the below of the cancellation of an appearance from Chaka Khan, who has been ordered on extended vocal rest by her doctors, Luminato organizers say.
The lineup for those showcases includes Oscar winner Glen Hansard, Ottawa singer-songwriter Kathleen Edwards and Canadian festival fixture Rufus Wainwright.
The June 19 concert will also feature 14-time Grammy winner Herbie Hancock and jazz singer Esperenza Spalding.
Mitchell will also take the stage on June 16 with Blade for an interview with New York Times music critic Jon Pareles, which will be webcast live.
