Idaho mountain biker dies in plunge on challenging trail near Vancouver, B.C.

NORTH VANCOUVER, B.C. – A U.S. man has died in a fall on the challenging backcountry cycling trails of Vancouver’s North Shore mountains.

RCMP Cpl. Richard De Jong says the 38-year-old mountain biker from Idaho was wearing a helmet but suffered severe head and neck injuries at around noon Monday.

De Jong says the man tumbled about two metres while biking alone on a trail on Mount Fromme, in Lynn Headwaters Regional Park in North Vancouver.

He was unconscious when he was found by other bikers and died before he could be carried off the mountain.

De Jong says it appears the man fell from a nearly two-metre-high balance board, similar to a teeter-totter, which is one of the obstacles available to cyclists using the trail.

The coroners’ service will look into the cause of the accident and De Jong says the man’s family has been informed, but his name has not been released. (News1130)
