City council votes in favour of artificial turf project for Pan Am Games
TORONTO – Toronto city council has voted in favour of the Pan Am Games project at the University of Toronto.
City councillors voted 30-12 to support replacing the grass on the back campus with two aritificial turf fields.
The vote ended a fierce battle that had split the university community in recent weeks and saw Canadian literary icon Margaret Atwood wade into the fray.
The facility will be the site for field hockey and para soccer at the 2015 Games, as well as an eastern hub for field hockey and a venue for U of T intramural sports.
Councillor Adam Vaughan had filed a petition with over 5,200 names to have the grass field behind Hart House designated as a heritage site.
But U of T officials, several counsillors, and Pan Am Games organizers argued the grass field in its current state is barely useable because of its poor condition.
Ground breaking is scheduled for July 1.
