Civic workers in Sechelt ready for job action after 93 per cent strike vote
SECHELT, B.C. – Civic workers employed by the District of Sechelt, on B.C.’s Sunshine Coast, expect to be on the picket line by the end of the day.
Seventy-two hour strike notice issued by the BC Government and Service Employees Union is due to expire at noon, affecting 45 staff members.
Union spokesman Evan Stewart says there has been no movement in the contract stalemate since strike notice was served, meaning a walkout is almost guaranteed.
He says workers will picket the main entrance to the District offices, but entrances to the aquatic centre, library and RCMP detachment will not be affected.
Officials with the district also say essential service arrangements will ensure the sewage treatment plant stays open and council business continues as scheduled.
Wages and hours of work are the key issues in the dispute and District of Sechelt BCGEU workers voted 93 per cent in favour of a strike, last month. (CKAY)
