Max Gartner is leaving Alpine Canada after more than 20 years with organization
CALGARY – Max Gartner is leaving Alpine Canada.
The president and CEO of Canada’s national ski organization says he plans to step down once a successor can be found.
The Calgarian has worked for Alpine Canada in various coaching and management positions since 1982, and was appointed president in the fall of 2010.
The 54-year-old had planned to leave when his contract expires after the 2014 Sochi Olympics, but decided to tender his resignation early in order to ensure a new president and CEO is in place for a crucial 2013-14 season.
Gartner has been a coach and manager to some of Canada’s biggest ski stars including Thomas Grandi, Cary Mullen and Ed Podivinsky.
The native of Linz, Austria, is a former professional soccer player who first joined Alpine Canada as an assistant coach.
He’s married to Olympic downhill gold medallist Kerrin Lee-Gartner and has two daughters, one of whom was recently named to the national alpine development team.
