Parents to receive review, charts from hospital where Rehtaeh Parsons treated

HALIFAX – A Halifax children’s hospital says it will provide Rehtaeh Parsons’ parents with recommendations from a peer review into how she was cared for last year after they voiced concerns about her treatment.

The internal medical report focuses on Parsons’ specific treatments and medical record, and is distinct from an external review announced earlier this week that will examine policies and procedures more generally at the IWK Health Centre and Capital District’s mental health services.

Parsons was admitted to the hospital in March 2012, about five months after she was allegedly sexually assaulted and became suicidal.

The 17-year-old girl hanged herself in April and was taken off life-support three days later.

Parsons’ father, Glen Canning, says he has numerous concerns about Parsons’ mental health treatment, and he says she also told him that she was strip searched by two male employees during her stay in the hospital.

The hospital has denied the strip search happened and the chief executive of the hospital says she hopes the review and a meeting with the family will help address their concerns.
