Where does your lobster come from? Mainers want to make sure you don’t say Canada
ST. GEORGE, Maine – New lobster processing plants are springing up in Maine.
Sea Hag Seafood in St. George is planning to freeze 2 1/2 million pounds of lobster products this year after opening up last summer. In Prospect Harbor, Maine Fair Trade Lobster began processing last month with nearly 100 employees.
Other plants have opened in Scarborough and Saco.
The call to increase Maine’s processing capacity grew loud last summer after lobster prices dropped and Canadian fishermen blockaded Maine lobster deliveries to Canadian processors. An estimated 60 to 70 per cent of Maine’s lobster catch is now shipped to Canada.
Sea Hag Seafood President Kyle Murdock thinks close to half of Maine’s processor-grade catch will be processed in-state down the road.
