Chinese police say Glaxo salespeople bribed doctors, hospitals

BEIJING, China – China’s Police Ministry says employees of drug manufacturer GlaxoSmithKline bribed doctors and hospitals to prescribe drugs.

The ministry said Thursday that the employees gave free travel to doctors, hospitals, foundations and medical groups. The brief statement gave no names of employees or other details.

GlaxoSmithKline didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

The company said previously it would co-operate with an investigation but said it didn’t know what Chinese authorities were looking into.

GlaxoSmithKline said in June it investigated an accusation that its salespeople in China bribed doctors and found no evidence of wrongdoing.

The company has said the police investigation might be based on information from the same anonymous source.
